Many average putters control their distance by decelerating the putter through the stroke. All good putters have a slightly longer follow-through than a backswing. The next time you practice putting, try rolling the ball to the hole without a backswing, or "pushing" the ball. You will find that you don't need nearly as much backswing as you think.
